Grounded – Privacy Policy

This policy explains how the Grounded mobile app handles information. Grounded helps parents manage and restrict usage on a child’s Android device. We aim to be transparent and align with UK GDPR and relevant Google Play policies.

Information we collect

Grounded operates on-device and does not send data to our servers. The app stores a minimal set of items locally to function:

  • Parent PIN (stored locally using one-way hashing)
  • Allowlist / blocklist of apps chosen by the parent
  • Grounded mode status (whether restrictions are active)
  • Screen-time statistics sourced from Android Usage Access

These remain on the device unless you back them up via your device’s own backup services.

Permissions used

  • Accessibility Service — to detect restricted apps and present the Grounded lock screen.
  • Usage Access — to measure screen time and generate reports.
  • Device Admin (optional) — to help prevent uninstallation without the Parent PIN.

What we don’t collect

  • No personal identifiers (e.g., name, email, phone)
  • No transmission of app usage data to us or third parties
  • No advertising SDKs and no analytics/tracking tools

How information is used

Data remains on the device and is used only to enforce parental controls, show the lock screen, protect against unauthorised uninstalls, and generate screen-time reports.

Data sharing

We do not share, sell, or transmit data to third parties. No information is sent to our servers.

Security

  • Parent PINs are stored using one-way hashing (e.g., SHA-256).
  • Permissions are limited to the stated purposes.
  • We recommend securing the device with a passcode.

Children’s privacy

Grounded is designed for parents/guardians, not directly for children. We do not knowingly process a child’s personal data.

Your rights

  • Reset or change your Parent PIN in the app
  • Uninstall the app (a Parent PIN may be required if uninstall protection is enabled)
  • Erase app data by uninstalling Grounded

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy to reflect changes in law, technology, or practices. The latest version will always be available at this URL.
